Hello! How do I leave the inventory screen and return to the game? If I press the menu key once, nothing happens; if I press it twice, I go to the main menu. Sometimes I randomly return to the game after some combinations of key presses, but usually I don't. Pleas help!

Sorry about the bump, but I'm really desperate. Is it even possible to exit the inventory screen without leaving the game? If it is, then someone must know how...

There are two different keys you can press to get to the inventory screen. This is very important!

The esc key will take you to the inventory screen (which also serves as the closest TAG has to a 'pause' function -- but note that there are some locations and conditions where the inventory screen is NOT available, such as underwater. Pressing esc while in the inventory screen takes you to the main menu, and you will lose any progress you have made since your last save if you do this.

But there is another key which will take you to your inventory screen!

For me, that key is M. I changed a lot of the keyboard associations, though, and I can't remember whether M was the original inventory-screen key or not. (It might've been I. You can always go into your TAG settings and see which key it's set to.) If you have changed your own keyboard interface settings, make sure that you don't have the esc key set as the key for both ways to the inventory screen!

Once you are in the inventory screen, even if you got there by pressing esc, you should be able to leave the inventory screen and return to the game by pressing the inventory screen button. Alternately, you can exit to the main menu by pressing esc after using the inventory key to get to the inventory screen, but in that case IIRC you do still need to press esc twice before the game will dump your progress.

Darn, it didn't work. :(

I literally pressed every key on my keyboard, both in the game and in the inventory screen. The only keys that did anything were Action, Attack, Jump, Menu, the arrow keys, and F2 (which basically gets you back to the main menu). In Control Setup, Action, Attack, Jump, Menu, and the arrow keys are the only controls listed - there doesn't appear to be an alternative menu button.

What really puzzles me is that there is no mention of this issue in the readme or in the game. It seems like a really, really basic consideration - no one wants to keep returning to the save point every time they look at their inventory. So there are only three possibilities:

1. There's something wrong with my computer or my version of the game. I do have the most recent version, so maybe it's corrupted?!
2. I'm missing something stupidly obvious.
3. There isn't any way to see your inventory without going to the main menu.

3 is ruled out because you found a way to do it.

I'll be very grateful if you can help me with this - it's the only major problem I have with this game. Has anyone else been able to use their inventory properly?

Okay, I think (fingers crossed!) I've figured out a solution for you.

Open up the setup.exe file in your game folder.

Click the button all the way on the right that says "Menu" and then press ANY key OTHER than ESC (or the ones that are already assigned another function, like the arrow keys).

That should change your regular menu button from being the same as the quit-to-menu-if-pressed-twice button. I believe ESC is hard-coded to do that, so pressing ESC will still take you to the inventory screen if pressed once and to the main menu if pressed twice.

I really hope this helps you! Many things you'll need to do in the game are difficult or impossible if you can't return to the game from the inventory screen.

It makes a lot of sense now. I changed the menu button to ESC because I'm so used to that in other games, and I guess the developer thought the same way. As a result, it was impossible for me to return to the game.

Yay! I'm glad you can get on with playing the game now. It's such an incredibly awesome game, it would've been tragic for you not to be able to play.

Possibly something about NOT setting the Menu key to esc should be added to the readme -- it's true esc is the default menu-key for a bunch of other games, so it seems likely other players might make the same mistake... and not everyone would think to find the forum & ask for help. (Lots of people never read readme files, either, but there's only so much foolproofing it's ever possible to carry out...)
